WAA Podcast Episode 50: The Holidays and Myths About Church Dropouts (1:19:56)

Welcome to the 50th podcast episode of "What's an Adventist?"

The majority of Adventists celebrate the holiday season with their friends, families and churches. Within Adventism it is encouraged to take the opportunity to reflect on the gift of Christ as well as find opportunities to reach out to others who are less fortunate. One of Adventism's founders wrote "When you have a holiday, make it a pleasant and happy day for your children, and make it also a pleasant day for the poor and afflicted. Do not let the day pass without bringing thanksgiving and thank offerings to Jesus."

This week on WAA, Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda, with the help of our WAA listeners, spread some holiday cheer by talking about some of the things Adventists do during the holidays and what some of our listeners are thankful for. Jesse and Abraham also talk about some of the myths around why young adults drop out of church. (Click on title to hear podcast)

As WAA wraps up 2011 we want to thank all of our contributors and listeners. We also want to thank the Lord for blessing this ministry and for giving us an opportunity to share our faith in this manner. WAA will be back in 2012 with more topics, guests, and commentaries. WAA Podcast Episode 49: Fundamental Belief 3: The Father (58:14)

Welcome to another podcast episode of "What's an Adventist?"

Ever think of God as a Father? Well Jesus did. Jesus taught his followers over and over again to look to the Father as the source of all things and to trust in His care. Even Jesus himself prayed earnestly to the Father for guidance and sustainability. No wonder that Jesus taught us to depend on a heavenly Father for all of our needs.  The Bible teaches us that "God the eternal Father is the Creator, Source, Sustainer, and Sovereign of all creation. He is just and holy, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. The qualities and powers exhibited in the Son and the Holy Spirit are also revelations of the Father. (Gen. 1:1; Rev. 4:11; 1 Cor. 15:28; John 3:16; 1 John 4:8; 1 Tim. 1:17; Ex. 34:6, 7; John 14:9.) (click on title to hear podcast)

This week Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda continue a podcast series on the fundamental beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and talk with Adventist Pastor Tony Gonzales about Fundamental Belief 3: God the Father. Pastor Gonzales helps us explore this part of God's nature as revealed in the Bible and reminds us that our heavenly Father is truly a person who is interested in each one of us.

WAA Podcast Episode 48: What About Mental Health Reform? (1:04:34)

According to the World Health Organization
121 million people struggle with depression

Welcome to another podcast episode of "What's an Adventist?"

Early in its history Adventism helped lead the way in health reform and drastically changed the American way of life. Today, although many Americans live healthier lives, many are experiencing emotional and psychological pain. A recent Barna study revealed that over 70 million Americans feel that they are being held back by their past and not living life to their fullest potential. Among other problems Americans face are depression, domestic violence, abuse, addictions and more. Mental health issues are becoming more and more widespread and are affecting countless of people including those in churches everywhere (click on title to hear podcast).

This week Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda talk about what the Adventist Church is doing to raise awareness regarding mental health and what things are being done to encourage Adventists to get involved in helping those who are hurting inside and outside the church.

WAA Podcast Episode 46: Fundamental Belief 2: The Trinity (1:03:53)

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”
All Christians believe in one God, but not all Christians believe in the idea of the Trinity. Although the word “Trinity” never appears in the Bible (neither does the word "incarnation"), Adventists believe that, “There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three co-eternal Persons. God is immortal, all-powerful, all-knowing, above all, and ever present. He is infinite and beyond human comprehension, yet known through His self-revelation. He is forever worthy of worship, adoration, and service by the whole creation.” (Deut. 6:4; Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14; Eph. 4:4-6; 1 Peter 1:2; 1 Tim. 1:17; Rev. 14:7.)
The idea of the Trinity or the “Godhead” was even controversial among the early Adventist pioneers. Today there continues to be some struggle in trying to understand this part of God’s nature.
This week Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda continue their series of commentary on the fundamental beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist church and talk about the second fundamental belief, “The Trinity.” This podcast is an introduction to this topic and does not cover every aspect of the idea of the Trinity in the Bible. Look out for more podcasts about this topic in the near future.

WAA Podcast Episode 45: A Vision For Better Health (49:10)

Diptheria was a deadly disease that threatened the lives of many
Americans in the 19th century
Living in the 19th century in America was like living in a third world country. Most Americans had no idea what a healthy lifestyle consisted of. As a result, many suffered from deadly diseases and because of the lack of proper medical attention many men, women, and children died. Very few medical professionals practiced natural medicine to treat their patients and those that did were not very well known nor were their methods widely accepted.

Christians were just as ignorant as the average American when it came to living a healthy life. There was very little difference in health habits between Christians and the world. Even early Adventists did not fully understand what a healthy life meant and it wasn’t until Ellen White received a divinely inspired vision that Adventists began to take a serious look at their health. This eventually helped spark a health reform movement that would literally breathe life into a sick, disease ridden, and dying nation (click on title to listen to podcast).

This week Jesse Sias talks about the vision that would eventually make Adventists the leading Christian denomination in health reform. Thank God for the light He shed on health and for alleviating some of the pain and suffering in our dying world.

WAA Podcast Episode 44: Trust Me, I'm a Prophet! (59:24)

Picture from Google Images

Welcome to another podcast episode of "What's an Adventist?"

If someone walked into your church claiming to be a messenger from God, how would you know if you could believe their claims?
Early in their history Adventists had to grapple with that dilemma when a young girl by the name of Ellen Harmon claimed to have dreams and visions that were divinely inspired. Contrary to what many may believe, Ellen Harmon (later known as Ellen G. White) was not quickly embraced by early Adventists. As a matter of fact, many were skeptical and were not willing to accept her messages unless they could find Biblical support for her claims.
Today, despite her tremendous achievements and the evidence of good fruits produced by her ministry, Ellen G. White continues to be a controversial and highly scrutinized figure within and without Adventist circles.
This week Jesse Sias and WAA Contributor Roshan Mansinghani talk about the Biblical tests a person must pass if they are to be considered a prophet or messenger of God and begin a biographical journey to see whether this Advent pioneer can truly be considered a godly messenger.

WAA Podcast Episode 43: Fundamental Belief 1: The Holy Bible (1:1:42)

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”
Through the ages the Bible has remained a controversial book, yet its impact on the course of history and individual lives is beyond dispute. Among Adventists, the Bible remains an spiritual authority and a true and literal record of God’s dealing with mankind. Adventists believe that the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation is God’s inspired word and within its pages lies a spectacular revelation of God’s immutable will and holy character.
Over the course of the next few months, WAA will be introducing a series of podcast commentaries dealing with the 28 fundamental beliefs of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. This week Jesse Sias and WAA Contributor Abraham MIranda provide a commentary on the first fundamental belief of the SDA Church, “The Holy Scriptures.” (click on title to hear podcast)

WAA Podcast Episode 42: Commentary: Responding To Hard Times (56:33)

Welcome to another podcast episode of "What's an Adventist?"

Religion and politics in America have always closed the gap in times of hardship and crisis and as times get harder this union will become stronger. Recently, Texas Governor Rick Perry made national headlines as he appealed to Americans to invite Jesus to guide and lead our nation at an event in Houston, TX called, “The Response.”
This week Jesse Sias and Adventist Pastor Tony Gonzales provide a commentary on Governor Perry’s appeal to America’s Christians and the implications of church and state from an Adventist perspective as well as talk about ideas within Adventism that should never be compromised even when times get hard (click on title to listen to podcast).

WAA Podcast Episode 41: From Teacher to Preacher (54:28)

James White, started his career as
a school teacher until God changed his life
Welcome to season 3 of "What's an Adventist?"

James White wrote of his young adult days, "At the age of twenty I had buried myself in the spirit of study and school teaching and had lain down the cross...I loved this world more than I loved Christ and the next, and was worshiping education instead of the God of heaven."

It was in this state of mind that James White set his course for life. Nothing appeared to be more important to him than having an education and developing a bright intellectual mind. But despite all of his academic and intellectual perseverance, God had different plans that would dramatically alter the course of James' life leading him to exchange worldly wisdom for the wisdom of God (click on title to hear podcast).

This week Jesse Sias gives a brief biographical sketch of one of the pioneers of the Seventh-day Adventist church. Like many of his Adventist contemporaries, James White faced many challenges and struggles in accepting God's calling in his life. The good news is that if God could use a man like James White, he can use people like you and I.
Also in this podcast Jesse extends a heartfelt thank you to listeners, guests, and all who have contributed their time and talents to WAA.

No, this is not a singles program for finding your Adventist life partner. AdventConnection is an Austin-based ministry led out by young adult Adventists who want to empower other young adults to grow spiritually, get involved in church, and share their faith. WAA Podcast Episode 36: You Don't Have to be a Big Time Evangelist (37:43)

Bishop TD Jakes, pastors the Potter's House in Dallas, TX
If you think you have to be a big time evangelist to share your faith, think again. William Miller, Joseph Bates, Ellen White, James White and other distinguished Adventist pioneers never intended to become spokespeople for God; but as they studied their Bibles and their faith grew, they couldn’t keep their love for Jesus and the Word to themselves. The truth is, every Christian can be and should be an evangelist.

This week Jesse Sias and Samuel Ikonne talk with WAA Contributor Christopher Mckenzie about what it means to be an evangelist and what it takes to share your faith with someone else. Also, in this podcast Jesse, Sam, and Chris discuss T.D. Jakes visiting Oakwood Adventist University to teach evangelism in the light of his views regarding the Sabbath. Click here to see T.D. WAA Podcast Episode 35: Can Prophecy be Trusted? (58:44)

Harold Camping claimed that his prediction
of Judgment Day on May 21, 2011 was from the Bible
Welcome back to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

Harold Camping recently made a prediction that the beginning of the "end of the world" would happen on May 21, 2011. His prediction garnered enough attention from the media to make it one of the most publicized “end of the world” predictions in quite some time. While Camping claimed that his prediction was straight out of the Bible, many, including Christians, were certain that this prediction would certainly bite the dust and go down in history as just another scandalous hoax. This had led many people to continue to doubt the reliability of Bible prophecy.

This week Jesse Sias sits down with WAA Contributor Pastor Tony Gonzales to talk about where Camping’s prediction went wrong and whether the Bible can truly be a reliable source of prophecy. Jesse and Pastor Tony also talk about a failed prophetic prediction in Adventist history that took place in the mid-1800’s that came to be known as the “Great Disappointment" as well as explore a number of Old Testament prophecies that came true! (click on title to hear podcast).

WAA Podcast Episode 34: Prophecy, This is Serious Stuff (61:42)

Welcome to another podcast episode of "What's an Adventist?"

“And the Lord God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers…because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, till there was no remedy.” (2 Chronicles 36:15, 16)

Anyone reading this Biblical passage would see the seriousness of messing with God’s word or his prophets. At the same time one would notice that God sent his prophets because he had compassion on his people who time and time again were found rebelling against God’s covenant. This pretty much sums up the whole purpose of prophecy. Prophecy is an expression of God’s love towards a fallen humanity and a warning to the destructive effects of falling away from His will.

This week Jesse Sias and Samuel Ikonne sit down with SDA Pastor Tony Gonzales to talk about how prophecy impacted God’s people in Biblical times and the role Adventism has played in impacting modern times through the historical understanding of the books of Daniel and Revelation (click on title to listen to podcast).

WAA Podcast Episode 33: "You Don't Eat Pork, Right?" (51:44)

Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda

When I tell people that I’m Adventist their first response is, “Oh, you guys don’t eat pork, right?” People generally know that Adventists have a different diet which includes abstaining from certain meats, foods, and drinks. This dietary lifestyle stems from what is known as the “health message” in Adventist circles. Although the health message has been a source of longevity and happiness for many Adventists, its history is filled with stories of sacrifice, conflict, disagreements, and humor, which continue even to this day (click on title to hear podcast).
This week Jesse Sias and special guest Abraham Miranda take a closer look at the history behind the Adventist health message and how it has evolved into one of the more recognized aspects of Adventism.

WAA Podcast Episode 32: Let's Face It, Adventists Have a Prophet (54:00)

Was Ellen White a prophet?
Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?

One of the most controversial issues within Adventism has to do with whether or not one of its founders was a prophet. But it shouldn't come as a surprise that people get fired up about this.

Prophets have always been the subjects of serious scrutiny, and rightly so. Jesus told his followers to be careful because there would be false prophets that would try to deceive them. The apostle John advises Christians to test the spirits to see if they are truly from God. So when one learns that Adventists believe that one of the founders of Adventism was a prophet, a healthy dose of skepticism is excatly what one needs.

This week Jesse Sias and WAA Contributor Roshan Mansinghani, begin a series of podcasts to confront the Adventist claim that God used a prophet to guide the Advent movement following the Great Disappointment of 1844. Who is this prophet, where did this person come from, and how can we trust this messenger? (click on title to listen to podcast).

WAA Podcast Episode 31: Is Jesus Changing You? (47:30)

Sometimes we forget that our Christian faith in reality is a transforming walk with Jesus. This means that when we step into the Christian faith we are committing ourselves to a long-term relationship with Jesus which involves the radical change of dying to sin, self, and yes even culture. What a journey! It’s no wonder that many Christians today, including Adventists, struggle with spiritual growth.
In fact, George Barna from the faith-based research firm the Barna Group, set out on his own quest to explore the reality of the state of spiritual growth among today’s American Christians. What did he find? (Click on title to listen).
This week Jesse Sias and Samuel Ikonne provide a commentary on George Barna’s recent study on spiritual growth among American Christians and ask the question, “Where are we as individuals and Adventist Christians?”

WAA Podcast Episode 30: Daughters of Thunder (58:45)

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

Before John became a follower of Jesus, he and his brother James were called “Sons of Thunder” because of their reputation for being hot tempered. But after three and a half years with Jesus John’s life would never be the same. The “Son of Thunder” came to be John the beloved. Does knowing Jesus have the same effect on people today?

This week Jesse Sias talks with Monica and Michelle Gutierrez about how their encounter with Jesus changed them from being the “Daughters of Thunder” to being passionate about their love for Jesus.

WAA Podcast Episode 29: What's on Your Profile? (51:12)

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

The rise and evolution of social networking sites have given the average person the ability to extend their influence far beyond just the people they know and put their lives on display for everyone to see. Sometimes it’s easy to get carried away and forget that we are still Christ’s representatives even when we’re online (click on the title to listen).

This week Jesse Sias and Samuel Ikonne talk about the importance of being an example not just in the “real world” but in the “online world” and encourage Adventists and Christians to be thoughtful about every aspect of their lives, including their cyberspace life.

WAA Podcast Episode 28: Is Your Adventist Church Really Ok? (52:31)

You might think your Adventist church is doing well because it seems to be “fitting in.” But a recent study showed that “fitting in” may not be all it’s cracked up to be. The Barna Group, a research firm that tracks the role of faith and religion in America, conducted a 2010 study that identified six “megathemes” indicating patterns that shape the Christian Church in America. What this study reveals may have tremendous implications for not just Christian churches in general, but for the Adventist church as well (click on title to listen).

This week Jesse Sias and Samuel Ikonne break down these six themes and talk about the role Adventism might play in today’s religious world.

WAA Podcast Episode 27: Meet Joseph Bates (42:23)

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”
Joseph Bates was once challenged by a Methodist lay leader who attacked the doctrine of the Advent message and threatened to send Bates away and “began to talk about riding us [out of town] on a rail.” Bates shot back at the man’s challenge by saying, “We are ready for that sir. If you will put a saddle on it, we would rather ride than walk.”
Such was the character of the man who would eventually become a strong advocate for the Advent and the Sabbath. But before Bates would give himself over to the Advent cause, he lived a life that had little to do with faith and religion (click on the title or the player below to listen).
This week, Jesse Sias brings you the story behind the life and adventures of Joseph Bates and his journey to becoming a faithful servant of God.

WAA Podcast Episode 26: The Lost Seal (55:50)

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

The prophetic books of Daniel and Revelation are regarded by many Christians as too complex and mysterious to understand. But within Adventism these books have played a significant role in determining the advancement of the Christian faith through some very testing times in earth’s history.

“The Seal of the Living God” found in Revelation Chapter 7 has been overlooked or neglected by the Christian world at large and perhaps at a great price. So what is this lost “seal” and what does it have to do with the advancement of the gospel and more importantly what does it have to do each Christian personally? (Click on title or player below to listen).

This week Jesse Sias and Samuel Ikonne talk with Pastor Tyler Bower about the “Seal of the Living God” and the responsibility each Christian has to live up to their faith.

WAA Podcast Episode 25: The Slacktivist and the Adventist (51:19)

Elder Ted Wilson speaking at GYC
Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

On October 6, 1844 William Miller wrote in the Midnight Cry, “My soul is so full I cannot write...I see that we are yet right. God’s word is true; and my soul is full of joy; my heart full of gratitude to God. Oh, how I wish I could shout. But I will shout when the ‘King of kings comes.’ Methinks I hear you say, ‘Brother Miller is now a fanatic! Very well, call me what you please; I care not; Christ will come...Oh! glorious hope. Then I shall see him, and be like him, and be with him forever. Yes, forever and ever.”

This pretty much captures the hopes and spirit of the early Adventists. Although Adventists today still hold on to the hope of Jesus return, over time that spirit has been slacking. Today, Adventist leaders are hoping to encourage Adventists all over the world to “go forward without turning back” and allow the Lord to rekindle the true spirit of revival and reformation (click on title or player to hear podcast).

This week Jesse Sias and Samuel Ikonne talk about the challenges Adventists face in being a Spirit-led movement again and where the true need lies if Adventists are to be true examples of the Christian hope and faith.

WAA Podcast Episode 24: Does God Speak? (54:10)

Adventists believe that God shows He cares by always being in touch with people. The way God continues to speak to us today is through the Bible and prophecy. But before the Bible even existed, God used a variety of means and methods, including people, to communicate his plans. Although some ways were stranger than others, the messages were always clear, relevant, and life saving (click on title to hear podcast).

This week Jesse Sias and Samuel Ikonne have an insightful talk with WAA? Contributor, Roshan Mansinghani, about the different ways God speaks to us through prophecy and the Bible. Roshan also shares how the question of whether God’s inspired messages are true and meaningful was the difference between becoming Christian or rejecting God.

WAA Podcast Episode 23: A.J. Talks Relationships (55:35)

Jesse Sias (left), Samuel Ikonne (Center), AJ Jones (right)
Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

Relationships play an important role in the world of Adventism. Although Adventists are taught to live in harmony with both God and people, that doesn’t mean there won’t be any problems. Adventists are just as human as anyone and can experience relationship problems as they grow in their faith. The good news is that no matter how bad things may get, God has a way of healing broken relationships if there is a willingness to live by His principles (click on title to hear podcast).

This week Jesse Sias and Samuel Ikonne talk to a loyal listener turned guest A.J. Jones about how God’s principles have made a difference in his life and his relationship with others. A.J. is currently involved at the Arlington Seventh-day Adventist Chruch in a ministry called Divorce Care whose purpose is to help people rebuild their lives using Biblical principles and guidelines. Divorce care is a ministry open to the community.

WAA Podcast Episode 22: Raquel Goes Solo to GYC (50:08)

(left to right) Jesse Sias, Raquel Coy, Samuel Ikonne
It’s not every day you see young people stepping out to share their faith and making a difference. But this past December that’s exactly what over 5,000 young people did at the 2010 GYC Session in Maryland and WAA? brings you a first hand account.

This week Jesse Sias and Samuel Ikonne talk to Raquel Coy about her experience at her first GYC. Being that it was her first solo trip anywhere outside of Texas, Raquel says that despite the challenges it was all worth it in the end. Raquel’s commitment to her faith this early in life is what being an Adventist youth is all about.

GYC is a youth led movement of Seventh-day Adventists which focuses on Bible study, intense prayer and living out one’s faith in Jesus. To learn more about GYC go to gycweb.org.
