WAA Podcast Episode 57: Mission to the Many Project (48:35)

Image from Google Images

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”
When I think of missionaries, I think of people who travel overseas and help bring relief to the suffering populations in third world countries like Africa, Indonesia, or some remote part of the world. Even though we live in a country where the majority of people have wealth and a standard of living well above the rest of the world, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any needs, especially when it comes to the cities.
There are areas in some of our large cities where people are destitute, poverty and crime is rampant, and the need for physical and spiritual healing is needed just as much as in other impoverished parts of the world. Historically, Adventism has strongly encouraged Christians to work diligently in the cities as this work is connected to a mighty movement; “The work in the cities is the essential work for this time. When the cities are worked as God would have them, the result will be the setting in operation of a mighty movement such as we have not yet witnessed” (Medical Ministry, 304).
This week Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda talk to Wes Via, Coordinator for the “Mission to the Many” (M2M) initiative. M2M is an initiative sponsored by the Pennsylvania Conference of Seventh-day Adventists whose mission is to recruit and equip volunteer missionaries to work specifically in urban areas.
If you would like to be an urban mission worker or would like more information on the M2M initiative you can contact Wes Via at wvia@paconference.org or visit their website at www.missiontothemany.com (currently under construction).

WAA Podcast Episode 56: Adventists as Light Bearers (45:07)

Image from Google Images
Welcome to another podcast episode of What's an Adventist?

“Ye are the light of the world...let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14,16). Christ taught his followers to not shy away from showing the world how God lives in them. This doesn’t mean that Christians should go around showing off how good they are or feeling superior than others. The light that Christ wants his followers to bear, is the light of a Christ-like character. When Christ is invited into the life of the believer, the believer experiences a such a radical change that it leaves no doubt that something supernatural  and godly has happened.
Early Adventist’s felt strongly about bringing the light of Christ into the world. An early Adventist author wrote, “We are to be channels of light to the world, imparting to others the light we receive from the great Light Bearer. The words and works of all men are to be tried. Let us not be backward now.”
This week WAA contributor Pastor Tony Gonzales, talks about what it means to be a light bearer and the responsibility Adventists and Christians have in living a life reflects the character of God (click on title to hear podcast).

WAA Podcast Episode 55: Friend or Foe? (54:58)

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”
Image from Google Images
Christianity is demonstrated in its purest form when Christians are living a life that reveals the loving character of Christ but is shown to be empty and cold when Christians claim to be godly and have no love for others. Since its founding, the Christian church has been plagued with conflict between those who faithfully represent Christ and befriend others to share their faith and those who claim to represent Christ but have fallen away from their true Christian duty.
This week Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda talk about the rewards of being a friendly Christian and the dangers of Anti-Christ or the falling away from the true spirit of Christianity (Click on title to listen to podcast).

WAA Podcast Episode 54: An Atheist, A Rabbi, and a Disciple (1:06:57)

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

The war between secularism and religion is an everyday reality in our country. While Christians passionately defend their rights to express their faith without any obstruction, secular and skeptic groups also feel it is their right to express their ideas and views as they see fit. So often these contentions make their way up to the courts for judges to decide how faith should or should not be exercised. At times the decisions favor religion and at times they favor secularism. Unfortunately, many times a religious right is defended the Christ-like spirit is lost.

Adventists, as well as Christians in general, have an obligation to walk as Jesus walked (1 John 2:6) regardless of the circumstances. The Bible teaches that Christians who say they are in the light but hate their brother, are still in darkness (1 John 2:9). When Adventists encounter a person who disagrees with Christianity, is hostile to faith, or has serious character defects, they should always remember that Christ has a plan for reaching them.

This week Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda talk about how God has a plan to reach people no matter who they are or where they are in their life.

WAA Podcast Episode 53: Throwing Away The Remnant? (1:05:42)

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”
The word “remnant” first appears in Revelation 12:17 and refers to a group of believers who “keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Following the Great Disappointment of 1844, a small group of Advent believers, through dedicated Bible study, discovered that the Ten Commandments were not done away with but played an important part in identifying God’s people. Besides discovering the importance of the Ten Commandments, they also witnessed God’s gift of the spirit of prophecy (the testimony of Jesus Christ) through the life and ministry of Ellen G. White. As they studied the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation, they came to identify themselves with the “remnant” of Revelation 12:17. This group eventually organized into what is today the Seventh-day Adventist church.
Today, the Seventh-day Adventist Church is the only Christian church that teaches all the commandments, including the observance of the seventh day Sabbath, and believes that God has continued to grant His people the spirit of prophecy to become powerful witnesses for Christ. However, there are those who would like to see this identity done away with (click on title to listen).
This week Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda talk about the significance of the “remnant” within Adventism and discuss how this identity is slowly being done away with.

WAA Podcast Episode 52: Adventist Food Fighters (1:00:52)

Image from Google Images
“One night I was awakened and instructed to write a straight testimony regarding the work of our school at Loma Linda. By that school a solemn, sacred work is to be done. The teachings of health reform are to stand out clearly and brightly, that all the youth in attendance may learn to practice them. All our educators should be strict health reformers.” -Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene Ch. 32 "A Deeper Consecration"

At the time Ellen White wrote these words regarding Loma Linda, there was widespread ignorance regarding health among the general population. Loma Linda was to be a place where people could come and learn how to live healthy lives according to Biblical principles. Besides being a central part of the health reform movement, it was also to be a place of spiritual awakening. “We are called upon God to present the truth for this time to those who year by year come to Southern California from all parts of America...Never are we to lose sight of the great object for which our Sanitariums are established-the advancement of God’s closing work in the earth.” -Counsels on Health Ch. 99 "Our Southern California Sanitariums"
Loma Linda is known today as one of a handful of “Blue Zones” around the world. According to a study conducted by National Geographic, a “Blue Zone” is an area where the longest living people on earth are known to live. Recently, Loma Linda made national news when some of its residents were outraged over McDonald’s revealing its plans to set up a restaurant within the their community. Could this be major set back in God’s plans for Loma Linda? (click on title to hear podcast).
This week on “What’s an Adventist?” Jesse Sias and Samuel Ikonne talk about the recent controversy at Loma Linda and tell you what our WAA listeners had to say about it. This podcast also includes shorter commentaries on the Tebow phenomenon and on the work of one of our partner ministries “Advent Connect” out of Austin, Texas.

WAA Podcast Episode 51: "Raquel Goes Back to GYC" (1:01:05)

GYC Theme
Image from Google Images

Welcome to WAA’s first podcast of 2012!

“Strengthened by the endowment of the Holy Spirit, they (disciples) went forth filled with zeal to extend the triumphs of the cross. The Spirit animated them and spoke through them. The peace of Christ shone from their faces. They had consecrated their lives to Him for service, and their very features bore evidence to the surrender they had made.” Acts of the Apostles, Ch. 4 “Pentecost”

Adventists believe that it is through the working of the Holy Spirit that the gospel message will touch the lives of people around the entire globe as Christ said it would. But unless Christians are praying everday for the Holy Spirit to work in them, they will not be fully empowered to share Jesus with others. The theme at this year’s GYC was Fill Me: Our Earnest Plea. Thousands of young Adventists gathered in Houston, TX to learn about what it means to really be used by God’s Spirit for His purpose and for His work. (click on title to listen to podcast)

This week our WAA contributor and GYC reporter Raquel Coy tells us first-hand what she learned and what she experienced at this year’s GYC.
