WAA Podcast Episode 53: Throwing Away The Remnant? (1:05:42)

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

The word “remnant” first appears in Revelation 12:17 and refers to a group of believers who “keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Following the Great Disappointment of 1844, a small group of Advent believers, through dedicated Bible study, discovered that the Ten Commandments were not done away with but played an important part in identifying God’s people. Besides discovering the importance of the Ten Commandments, they also witnessed God’s gift of the spirit of prophecy (the testimony of Jesus Christ) through the life and ministry of Ellen G. White. As they studied the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation, they came to identify themselves with the “remnant” of Revelation 12:17. This group eventually organized into what is today the Seventh-day Adventist church. 

Today, the Seventh-day Adventist Church is the only Christian church that teaches all the commandments, including the observance of the seventh day Sabbath, and believes that God has continued to grant His people the spirit of prophecy to become powerful witnesses for Christ. However, there are those who would like to see this identity done away with (click on title to listen).

At the time Ellen White wrote these words regarding Loma Linda, there was widespread ignorance regarding health among the general population. Loma Linda was to be a place where people could come and learn how to live healthy lives according to Biblical principles. Besides being a central part of the health reform movement, it was also to be a place of spiritual awakening. “We are called upon God to present the truth for this time to those who year by year come to Southern California from all parts of America...Never are we to lose sight of the great object for which our Sanitariums are established-the advancement of God’s closing work in the earth.” -Counsels on Health Ch. 99 "Our Southern California Sanitariums"

Loma Linda is known today as one of a handful of “Blue Zones” around the world. According to a study conducted by National Geographic, a “Blue Zone” is an area where the longest living people on earth are known to live. Recently, Loma Linda made national news when some of its residents were outraged over McDonald’s revealing its plans to set up a restaurant within the their community. Could this be major set back in God’s plans for Loma Linda? (click on title to hear podcast).

Welcome to WAA’s first podcast of 2012!

Adventists believe that it is through the working of the Holy Spirit that the gospel message will touch the lives of people around the entire globe as Christ said it would. But unless Christians are praying everday for the Holy Spirit to work in them, they will not be fully empowered to share Jesus with others. The theme at this year’s GYC was Fill Me: Our Earnest Plea. Thousands of young Adventists gathered in Houston, TX to learn about what it means to really be used by God’s Spirit for His purpose and for His work. (click on title to listen to podcast)

Welcome to the 50th podcast episode of "What's an Adventist?"


The majority of Adventists celebrate the holiday season with their friends, families and churches. Within Adventism it is encouraged to take the opportunity to reflect on the gift of Christ as well as find opportunities to reach out to others who are less fortunate. One of Adventism's founders wrote "When you have a holiday, make it a pleasant and happy day for your children, and make it also a pleasant day for the poor and afflicted. Do not let the day pass without bringing thanksgiving and thank offerings to Jesus."


This week on WAA, Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda, with the help of our WAA listeners, spread some holiday cheer by talking about some of the things Adventists do during the holidays and what some of our listeners are thankful for. Ever think of God as a Father? Well Jesus did. Jesus taught his followers over and over again to look to the Father as the source of all things and to trust in His care. Even Jesus himself prayed earnestly to the Father for guidance and sustainability. No wonder that Jesus taught us to depend on a heavenly Father for all of our needs.  The Bible teaches us that "God the eternal Father is the Creator, Source, Sustainer, and Sovereign of all creation. He is just and holy, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. Early in its history Adventism helped lead the way in health reform and drastically changed the American way of life. Today, although many Americans live healthier lives, many are experiencing emotional and psychological pain. A recent Barna study revealed that over 70 million Americans feel that they are being held back by their past and not living life to their fullest potential. Among other problems Americans face are depression, domestic violence, abuse, addictions and more. Mental health issues are becoming more and more widespread and are affecting countless of people including those in churches everywhere (click on title to hear podcast).


This week Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda talk about what the Adventist Church is doing to raise awareness regarding mental health and what things are being done to encourage Adventists to get involved in helping those who are hurting inside and outside the church.
