One of the most controversial issues within Adventism has to do with whether or not one of its founders was a prophet. But it shouldn't come as a surprise that people get fired up about this.

Prophets have always been the subjects of serious scrutiny, and rightly so. Jesus told his followers to be careful because there would be false prophets that would try to deceive them. The apostle John advises Christians to test the spirits to see if they are truly from God. So when one learns that Adventists believe that one of the founders of Adventism was a prophet, a healthy dose of skepticism is excatly what one needs.

This week Jesse Sias and WAA Contributor Roshan Mansinghani, begin a series of podcasts to confront the Adventist claim that God used a prophet to guide the Advent movement following the Great Disappointment of 1844. You might think your Adventist church is doing well because it seems to be “fitting in.” But a recent study showed that “fitting in” may not be all it’s cracked up to be. The Barna Group, a research firm that tracks the role of faith and religion in America, conducted a 2010 study that identified six “megathemes” indicating patterns that shape the Christian Church in America. What this study reveals may have tremendous implications for not just Christian churches in general, but for the Adventist church as well (click on title to listen).

Joseph Bates was once challenged by a Methodist lay leader who attacked the doctrine of the Advent message and threatened to send Bates away and “began to talk about riding us [out of town] on a rail.” Bates shot back at the man’s challenge by saying, “We are ready for that sir. If you will put a saddle on it, we would rather ride than walk.”
