Welcome to the final podcast episode of WAA’s coverage of the Southern Youth Conference 2012 in Richardson, TX. 

This podcast features final thoughts from several young people who attended SYC this year. All the people we interviewed had one thing in common; they were eager to share their faith and they looked forward to Jesus’ return. We believe that’s what being an Adventist is all about! 

In Acts of the Apostles Ellen White wrote, “The Spirit of the Almighty is moving upon men’s hearts, and those who respond to its influence become witnesses for God and His truth...And as they continue to let their light shine...they receive more and still more of the Spirit’s power. Thus the earth is to be lightened with the glory of God” (Ch. 5, The Gift of the Spirit). 

We at WAA hope that this podcast series of SYC 2012 encourages you to walk closer with Jesus and make Him your source of meaning and hope.

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself to me.” (Galatians 2:20)

Those who attended the Southern Youth Conference this year had the chance to reflect on what it means to be crucified with Christ. Although the idea of crucifixion is horrifying, this Biblical passage encourages Christians to live fully in Christ and to crucify anything that gets in the way of a life fully committed to Jesus. SYC 2012 brought young people together to learn how to live out this Christian standard.

WAA takes you live behind the scenes of the Southern Youth Conference held annually in Richardson, TX. Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

It is a historical fact that the Roman Catholic Church has a track record of religious repression and persecution. So when it was recently reported that Rome could be the new center for religious liberty the natural response was “huh?” Although we are centuries removed from the days of the Protestant reformation, Adventism has within in genetic code, if you would, the very spirit that led the Protestant reformers to break with the Roman Church and to perceive it as a threat to religious freedom. Some believe that these “Protestant” attitudes and ideas about the Catholic Church are outdated and old news and see any attempt at criticizing the Church as just plain hateful. 

This week Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda provide a commentary on this issue of Catholicism and religious liberty from an Adventist perspective. The views expressed here are not intended to promote anti-Catholic sentiments, but to show how Adventist’s view and perceive these important issues and developments. We ask that Adventists and anyone that hears this information share it in a thoughtful and loving way. And if you don't know enough about this issue, please study it further before sharing. Also in this podcast Jesse and Abraham explore the idea of whether Adventists are completely out of touch with reality and are conspiracy theory junkies. 

By the way, this podcast is in no way part of a larger conspiracy to make everyone in the world accept the “Adventistee” way of life...or is it?

Welcome to another podcast episode of "What's an Adventist?" 

Heman S. Gurney, a blacksmith, came to join the Advent movement after listening to Advent preacher William Miller tell of Christ’s soon return. Later, he came to accept Ellen Harmon’s claims of being a godly messenger only after conducting his own personal investigation on the matter. This was only the beginning of Gurney’s faith walk. His story is one filled with love for Christ and a simple yet relentless faith. Gurney was also known as the singing blacksmith for the fact that he always seemed to carry a tune in his heart. His biography tells us that his favorite song was “I’m a Pilgrim and I’m a Stranger.” (Click on title to listen to podcast).

This week Jesse Sias tells the story of this little known but dedicated Adventist pioneer whose faith and dedicated service is a reminder to all of us that no matter what our walk in life, we can do great things for God’s kingdom. WAA Podcast Episode 58: Fundamental Belief 4: The Son (46:58)

 Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

Who was Jesus? Was he fully man or fully God? Or both? These are some of the questions Christians have struggled with when it comes to the nature of Jesus Christ. Early Adventists were no exception. Many of the church’s most prominent founders such as James White and Joseph Bates, while accepting that Jesus was divine, did not accept that Jesus was equal to God. Only after several spirited debates and painstaking Bible study did they come to acknowledge and accept that in Christ was “life original and underived.”

Fundamental belief number four of the Seventh day Adventist church states, “God the eternal Son became incarnate in Jesus Christ. Through Him all things were created, the character of God is revealed, the salvation of humanity is accomplished, and the world is judged. Forever truly God, He became also truly man, Jesus the Christ. He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He lived and experienced temptation as a human being, but perfectly exemplified the righteousness and love of God. By His miracles He manifested God's power and was attested as God's promised Messiah. He suffered and died voluntarily on the cross for our sins and in our place, was raised from the dead, and ascended to minister in the heavenly sanctuary in our behalf. He will come again in glory for the final deliverance of His people and the restoration of all things. (John 1:1-3, 14; Col. 1:15-19; John 10:30; 14:9; Rom. 6:23; 2 Cor. 5:17-19; John 5:22; Luke 1:35; Phil. 2:5-11; Heb. 2:9-18; 1 Cor. 15:3, 4; Heb. 8:1, 2; John 14:1-3.)”

This week Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda continue WAA’s series on the fundamental beliefs of the Seventh day Adventist Church with a commentary on Fundamental Belief 4: The Son. Jesse gives a brief historical account of the this idea in Adventist history while Abraham takes a few moments to remind us of why a Biblical understanding of God the Son is so vital to the Christian faith.
