From the beginning the Advent movement was established on the authority and study of Scripture. As the early Adventists gained new Biblical insights they found it important to provide some clarification as to what the Bible says on certain doctrines. Since early Adventists decided against forming an official church creed, they developed a list of fundamental beliefs they believed any Christian could adopt if they believed in the authority of the Bible. These fundamental beliefs were never meant to determine membership or exclusively support denominational efforts but rather provide sound Bible based explanations on certain key doctrines central to the Christian faith. Over time the number of doctrines on this list has changed. Today the Seventh day Adventist Church has identified 28 fundamental biblical doctrines essential to the faith and salvation of any Christian, Adventist or not.

Should our fundamental beliefs be used to support the existence of our Adventist institutions and policies or should they be used as a guide to point others back to God and His Word as the ultimate source of knowledge and wisdom? It's been over a year and a half since we last released a WAA podcast. One might say we've been wandering in the wilderness for 40 years! We've been met with several challenges but have learned that God is always faithful if we're willing to grow and listen to Him. We intend on resuming (and continuing) this podcast ministry and hopefully add a new voice to our program. We have no idea what new doors God will open, but like Isaiah all we can say is "here I am, send me."

WAA Column: Noah's Ark: An Encounter Between Us and God

An impressive life size exhibit in Kentucky featuring Noah's Ark is attracting both Christians and Non Christians and stirring up conversation about this famous Bible story.

During his ministry on earth Jesus also made use of the story of Noah (Luke 17:26). But Jesus was not trying to directly defend a creationist perspective nor was he trying to make scientific claims about the story, which seems to be one of the main objectives behind the exhibit. More importantly, he was using history to teach a spiritual lesson. A lesson that we should think about seriously in our day.

Jesus began, "As it was in the days of Noah..." Jesus draws his audience's attention to a specific point in time in history- the time of Noah. This opening statement is like saying, "Remember Noah?" Jesus is talking about this story as though it is a historical fact. This serves the purpose of emphasizing the reality of what had taken place historically and what will take place at the close of earth's history. 

Jesus continues, "So shall it be in the days of the Son of man..." Jesus makes a connection between two specific periods in time, the days of Noah and the days of the Son of man.  The "days of the Son of man" is in reference to the days when Christ will  judge the world and set up his everlasting Kingdom (Daniel 7:13). Jesus is saying that there is an absolute relationship between the way of life during Noah's time and the way of life in the final days of judgement and the establishment of His Kingdom.

Jesus goes on to explain that during the time of Noah people were eating, drinking and marrying. People were doing what they basically needed to do to survive and procreate. Interestingly, worshiping God or remembering their Creator is not mentioned, suggesting faith in God was not considered something that was necessary for living a good life or ensuring a posterity. At a time when judgement was imminent, there was no regard for God, the Author of life. 

Jesus finally describes the end result of a world oblivious to God and living on its uninhibited natural drives and passions. After years of warning people of God's judgement, Noah and his family were the only ones who trusted God, entered the Ark and were saved from the flood.

It's rather coincidental that this modern reminder of the story of Noah is taking place at a time in our country, and around the world, when people are "eating, drinking and marrying" with less regard for their personal relationship with God. Although the dialogue around this modern day Ark exhibit centers around the questions of Religion vs. Science, the real story behind Noah is about a world facing judgement and on the brink of destruction for turning away from God. It's really the story about us. 

The point Jesus was trying to make in recalling the story of Noah is that in the days of His judgement and the second coming, the world would be in the same condition as in the days of Noah. During a time of divine judgement, people would be living unrestrained lives, committing acts of violence and hatred, and dismissing the Creator as a necessary part of life. Too many people would be busy "eating, drinking, and marrying" to really make any changes. As one journalist covering the Ark story put it, "the Ark will change some minds, but not the majority."  According to the Bible we are living in the time of judgement but you would never know it based on how people are living. Just like in the days of Noah.

Even if not many people change, the Ark exhibit might serve the greater purpose of encouraging an encounter with God's Word and create an awareness of the state of the world, a time of judgement and prompt people to think about their relationship with God. Hopefully this time around we can all give some serious thought to taking His Word and warnings seriously before it's too late.

If there’s one thing we simply can’t hide from, it’s technology. Technology is all around us and the way things are going it may literally be “in” us in the not too distant future. Whatever technological advances the future holds, the truth is technology has already invaded every part of our existence. Never before have we relied on such powerful inventions to guide our everyday lives from the moment we wake to the moment we go to sleep. Can this be a good thing or is there a dark side to all these advancements? Is technology really helping us become better people? What about better Christians?

Even early Adventists had to struggle with the trends of inventions in their day. Many people were becoming so consumed with the latest in fashion and other innovative commodities that they were losing focus on the more important things in life. At one point Adventist leaders had to point out the danger of neglecting one’s spirituality and faith in exchange for worldly attractions. Is the same thing happening today?

WAA Podcast Episode 80: The Protest Is Over, Is Yours? (43:39)

Have you heard? The great protest is over! The Catholic Church has sorted out its differences with the Lutherans on the subject of righteousness by faith and now everything is settled. There is no need to continue the protest Luther started. Besides, as far the Protestant reformation goes it was all a big misunderstanding and everyone shares the blame for what happened in the past between the Catholic Church and the reformers.

Well, at least that’s what the Catholic Church wants Protestant Christians and the world to believe.

This is the message the Catholic Church is sending to Protestants in its recent attempts to persuade them to bury the hatchet and return to the Mother Church. The problem is that its really not that simple and the Church’s message overlooks and downplays her errors and oppressive character. The Church also takes a very nonchalant stance when it comes to the real and tragic history of the reformation period. 

Through the study of Bible prophecy, Adventists believe the Roman Catholic Church will make an all out attempt to unite and subject all churches under its power and authority. The Catholic Church reasons that it is the only power which can bring unity and stability to a fragmented religious world. The problem is that Catholicism at its core opposes Biblical doctrine and truth and Adventists have been given the task to warn the world and other Christians of her oppressive and deceptive character. 

An early Adventist author and church leader, Ellen White wrote in 1888, “Protestants have tampered with and patronized popery; they have made compromises and concessions which papists themselves are surprised to see and fail to understand. Men are closing their eyes to the real character of Romanism and the dangers to be apprehended from her supremacy. The people need to be aroused to resist the advances of this most dangerous for to civil and religious liberty” (The Great Controversy, “Liberty of Conscience Threatened”).

This week Jesse, Abraham and Eli talk about the recent message delivered to the Pentecostal denomination by the Catholic Church and how this is evidence of the Church’s efforts to regain supremacy as foretold in Bible prophecy. The warning in 1888 still rings true today.

Living in a fast paced society has some benefits. For example, overnight shipping, on-demand movies, instant meals, and drive-thru’s are all supposed to help us save time so we can make room for more important things, but when it comes to our spiritual lives should we rely on expediency to help us grow closer to Jesus? Even though sometimes it seems easier to do things quickly, not spending quality time in prayer and study can have a detrimental effect on our spiritual senses and cause us to ignore or disregard what God is trying to tell us. 

The book Christian Leadership reminds us, “The bustle of business, if continuous, will dry up spirituality and leave the soul Christless. Although they may profess the truth, yet if men pass along day by day with no living connection with God, they will be led to do strange things; decisions will be made not in accordance with the will of God” (Chapter 3)

This week Jesse, Eli, and Abraham express their mixed feelings about an outreach ministry that offers drive thru prayer. They also discuss and explore the Adventist tradition of “present truth” and encourage WAA listeners to alway maintain and inquiring mind that always seeks truth!

Bible stories are making a comeback! Or are they? Well if you've watched the latest trailers for the upcoming films "Noah" or "Son of God" you might at first believe that Bible stories are roaring back into our culture, You might even be persuaded to believe this will provide the Christian faith the lift it needs to rise above all the secular noise. After all, the media have reported Christian churches have bought out entire theaters in anticipation of these would be blockbuster films.

As good as these movies may appear, are they really accurate representations of the stories found in Scripture and do they capture the essence of the divine plan of salvation? Or is the enemy using the entertainment industry to blunt our spiritual senses and give us a false impression of God and His faithful servants?

Even early Adventists were advised to guard against Satan's strategy to confuse the senses. "Satan's work is to lead men to ignore God, to so engross the mind that God will not be in their thoughts. Satan does not wish people to have a knowledge of God; and if he can set in operation games and theatrical performances that will so confuse the senses of the young  that human beings will perish in darkness while light shines all about them, he is well pleased" (Advent Home, "The Portals We Must Watch").

Although 2014 is well underway, it's never too late to make a commitment to follow Jesus. Even when things are going well and one is feeling optimistic about the future, one should never attempt to walk the Christian faith without Jesus, not even for a micro second. 

Our culture of ease, self-indulgence, and security tempts us to rely on ourselves rather than God and the consequences can be downright spiritually devastating. In writing about the Israelites, Ellen G. White penned,”They failed to keep God ever before them, they neglected prayer and cherished a spirit of self-confidence. Ease and self-indulgence left the citadel of the soul unguarded, and debasing thoughts found entrance” (Mind Character and Personality, Ch.9). The rest, as they say, is history.

How important is it to be “real” when it comes to being an Adventist Christian? Well let’s put it this way, Ellen White once wrote the following about believers who are not genuine, “He might display great liberality; but should he, from some other motive than genuine love, bestow all his goods to feed the poor, the act would not commend him to the favor of God. In his zeal he might even meet a martyr’s death, yet if not actuated by love, he would be regarded by God as a deluded enthusiast or an ambitious hypocrite” (Acts of the Apostles Ch. 30)

In order to avoid delusion or hypocrisy, a reality check is sometimes needed. A recent study of the Adventist church shows what is really going on in the church today and what are the prevailing beliefs and attitudes among church members. Are we being “real” with ourselves, others and God or are we just pretending to be zealous Adventists but are far from demonstrating genuine faith and love?

An early Adventist wrote, “The home feeling should be kept alive in the hearts of the children, that they may look back upon the home of their childhood as a place of peace and happiness next to heaven.”

Have you heard? The current Pope has an Adventist relative and he’s not happy about it! Apparently the conversion of his family member to the Adventist faith was enough to prompt him to want to punish Adventists by imposing Sunday laws at some point during his Papacy. At least that's according to formerly ordained Adventist minister Hugo R. Gambetta. Unfortunately, some Adventists look towards these types of sensational stories and unfounded rumors as inspired signs of the end times. Instead all these stories do is stir people up for all the wrong reasons. Maybe some Adventists feel that unless something dramatic is happening there’s no real need for urgency. The fact is that regardless of what stories are out there, Adventists, and Christians in general, should be vigilant and focused on the development of their own spiritual lives and searching for an authentic spirituality.

This week Jesse and Abraham take WAA on the road and talk with the leaders, organizers, and volunteers responsible for organizing the health fair to find out exactly what motivated the Come and See Church to reach out to their community in this way.

One of the most iconic laws in history are the Ten Commandments. Although written thousands of years ago, in supernatural fashion, they have transcended time and cultures. Many consider the Ten Commandments to be the highest standard of both spiritual and moral living. What is it about the Ten Commandments that make them so special? Are they just a bunch of rules or do they teach us a more profound truth about ourselves and God?

Adventists believe the Ten Commandments are still relevant today and still make it a point to teach and keep all ten as they are outlined in the book of Exodus. Adventists are sometimes accused of practicing and encouraging legalism, but this is far from the truth.

WAA Podcast Episode 70: H-E-Double Hockey Sticks (59:13)

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?” 

The idea of hell has been around for a very long time. The Greek philosopher, Socrates, taught that hell was a place of eternal torment although he acknowledged it was a fictitious idea. Over time the idea of hell and eternal torment became very literal and was used as a tactic to scare people into being saved. In some cases people even gave up their own possessions and dignity to avoid the fire and brimstone.  

Today, there are still many Christians who believe hell is a real place where bad people go to be forever tormented by Satan. Many believe this is divine justice and many still use this idea to prompt people to seek salvation. Unfortunately, these ideas do more damage than good when it comes to helping people understand the God of the Bible. How can a loving and just God allow people to burn and be tormented forever? 

An early Adventist author wrote, “How repugnant to every emotion of love and mercy, and even to our sense of justice, is the doctrine that the wicked dead are tormented with fire and brimstone in an eternally burning hell; that for the sins of a brief earthly life they are to suffer torture as long as God shall live.” While Adventists believe in a real hell, it has very little in common with the popular ideas most people have grown up hearing and believing.

Welcome to our first WAA podcast of 2013!

The study of last day events. also called eschatology, has always been a part of the Adventist identity. Regarding the last days and Christ's second coming, Ellen White counseled, "Great pains should be taken to keep this subject before the people." Within Adventism there has always been an earnest interest in last day events and as with other Biblical doctrines the study of eschatology can be misconstrued and abused. But when studied carefully and prayerfully, eschatology reveals God's faithfulness through difficult times, the magnitude of His divine will, and shows us how He will carry out His ultimate judgements. 

For some Christians, including Adventists, eschatology has become too much of a mystery or a complex puzzle. An attitude is emerging within the church suggesting since last day events are complex, hard to understand or just plain weird, it may be time to move on, focus on the gospel message alone and not worry about the "last days."

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

A lot has happened since our last podcast. Our country elected a President, the holidays are in full swing, and a man who looked like Jesus was escorted out of a dart’s tournament. Oh yeah, and let’s not forget the world is coming to an end on December 21, 2012…again.

This week Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda provide a commentary on some recent stories and events that have made the news over the last month, including what our WAA fans had to say about the issue on whether Adventist’s should vote, or not.

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

While nice thoughts can be helpful that doesn’t mean they are always true. When it comes to faith, we can’t rely on just “nice thinking” to guide our spirituality. While it may be nice to think of the Sabbath as a day off to hang out with church friends and perform acts of charity, the truth is the Sabbath is central to God’s identity as Creator, is part of His eternal law (The Ten Commandments) and has a lot to do with our allegiance to Him.

The general attitudes of our post modern culture are saturated with nice thoughts but many of those thoughts either run contrary to what the Bible teaches or have the effect of softening aspects of faith that should inspire conviction and a reverence for God and His revelations.

On this podcast Jesse Sias and Abraham Miranda talk about the effects of post modernism on the Adventist and Christian faith and give a few examples of how today’s Christian religion seems to be sinking into a ocean of “nice thinking.”

WAA Podcast Episode 66: Fuzzy Math and the Investigative Judgement (1:00:47)

Welcome to another podcast episode of “What’s an Adventist?”

When Christ moved into the Most Holy place in the heavenly temple on October 22, 1844, the final part of the whole plan of salvation was put in play. The investigative or pre-advent judgment is the last phase of Christ’s intercessory ministry on behalf of the human race. Just like the Day of Atonement in the Old Testament signaled the time of judgment for the Israelites, the investigative judgment which began in 1844 signaled the start of judgment for the world and God’s faithful people from every tribe, nation, and tongue.


Can God's judgments be explained
with math?

How important is this subject and can mathematics explain it? In commenting on the matter, Ellen White lays it out in a very direct way, “It is those who by faith follow Jesus in the great work of the atonement who receive the benefits of His mediation in their behalf, while those who reject the light which brings to view this work of ministration are not benefited thereby” (Great Controversy, Ch. 24). In other words to benefit fully from Christ’s mediation, you have to believe in it. On the other hand, George P. Saxon, author of the Saxon lecture series at Southwestern Adventist University, thinks this subject deserves as much attention as a mathematical formula. As this Biblical teaching is rejected, God’s Spirit is withdrawn and men are left to their own deceptions which they love.
